I Am (Called to Be) Humble

What does it mean to be Humble?

I probably don't have to say this, but I'm gonna anyway: Jesus is our perfect teacher, and display of humility. We'll talk more about that later in this blog post.

To be humble, or show humility, means you have a reflective attitude rather than a defensive or prideful one. It means expressing or offering in a spirit of deference or submission.

What does deference mean? It means respect and esteem due to a superior or elder. How about the respect due to God, our Creator? YES and AMEN!

Humility could also be thought of as meekness, which is a mild or submissive quality. We are called to be both meek and humble. To be humble is the absence of pridefulness, haughtiness, and arrogance.

The Hebrew definition of humble is meek, to be subdued, be brought down, to be low, be under, be brought into subjection. The Greek definition translates humility to a deep sense of one's moral littleness; modesty, not rising far from the ground, and bringing low.

I think it's also really important to talk about what being humble does not mean, because there's a false thought process circulating around the Church and even in secularism.

Humility and meekness do not equate to weakness or 'peace at all costs'.

Humility isn't accepting abuse, of any kind. It's not "just forgive and forget". It's not going to the holiday dinner with a tableful of abusive and toxic people just because that's what is expected of you.

I do not believe for one second that our Loving Father would want His Warrior daughters to be flippin' doormats. Do you? I sure hope not.

Humility is a heart condition - not physical, but spiritual. It's spiritual maturity. Pride is immature and selfish. And shall we remind ourselves of the sole reason the enemy got kicked out of Heaven? That's right - PRIDE. gross

Now, if Satan got schmackled (no, it's not a word, but I'm typing it anyway) out of Heaven because of pride, what's the exact opposite of that? Jesus on the cross is the most humble and humiliating thing anyone will do for you.

But wait, there's more...

“Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”  -Matthew 20:26-28

Not only did our Jesus get beat and torn apart and go up on that cross, but He also went down to the pit, let everyone know what was up (HA!), and then came back to life. Oh! And then He stayed here to continue teaching his disciples so they could share all this great news!

He washed the feet of his friends, He bent down low to the woman caught in adultery, He asked the woman at the well (who had 5 husbands, working on #6) for water, and He wandered in the wilderness for 40 days with no food and no water.

Sometimes, it's really difficult to be humble, especially if we are being abused. We want to fight back or get vengeance. But that's not the right answer either. I could go on and on about this particular subject but I won't here. I will say for now that if you're in an abusive or toxic situation, the most humbling thing you can do is pray for that person or people, and leave if you're able. Lean into God.

And sometimes the most humbling thing is to stay, too. Either way, pray and rely on Father.

I'll chat more about this in my video which you can watch on my YouTube Channel or Rumble.
