God Says I Am Blessed

What does it mean to be Blessed?

The poor in spirit are blessed, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs. Those who mourn are blessed, for they will be comforted. The gentle are blessed, for they will inherit the earth. Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are blessed, for they will be filled. The merciful are blessed, for they will be shown mercy. The pure in heart are blessed, for they will see God. The peacemakers are blessed, for they will be called sons of God. Those who are persecuted for righteousness are blessed, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs. You are blessed when they insult and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of Me. Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you. - Matthew 5:3 - 12

Blessed means to be held in reverence; of or enjoying happiness; bringing pleasure, contentment, or good fortune. It means to invoke divine care for; to praise, or glorify; to speak well of; to approve, endow, or show favor to.

What does approve mean. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it means to have or express a favorable opinion of; to accept as satisfactory; to give formal or official sanction.

Dear one, God holds you in reverence. He has approved you - you're His very favorite, and He's given you formal and official sanction by the Holy Spirit because of the blood of Jesus on the Cross.

In Hebrew, Blessed means to go straight (walk on the straight and narrow path - Proverbs 3:6), walk, go on, make progress, and to set right. One of the definitions also stated that it means to be made happy, and/or gain prosperity.

We are truly prosperous with Jesus!

It's interesting to me that the Greek translation was simply to count happy or be happier. Hmm... I have some interesting thoughts on that, but I won't share them here.

What I heard from the Lord while doing this word study is this: our choice to act and behave in Righteous and Holy ways makes us happy.

When we do the right things because it's the right thing, even if our flesh is disappointed, our spirits are happy. We could avoid so much heartache and negative natural consequences if we'd stay on God's narrow path for us. When we obey the Lord, we are blessed.

I loved the following passages from GotQuestions.org posts: To be poor in spirit is to recognize your utter spiritual bankruptcy before God. It is understanding that you have absolutely nothing of worth to offer God.

The term mourn means “to experience deep grief.” In keeping with His theme of spiritual blessedness, Jesus seems to indicate that this mourning is due to grief over sin. The people who agree with God about the evil of their own hearts can attain an "enviable state of blessedness," due to the comfort they receive from communion with the Holy Spirit.
