The Gentle Are Blessed

The gentle are blessed, for they will inherit the earth.
- Matthew 5:5

Gentle people are humble, meek, and soft. They humbly trust in God rather than arrogantly trusting in themselves or their own will. Gentle people tend to have a quietness to them and are full of self-control.

But the humble will inherit the land and will enjoy abundant prosperity.
- Psalm 37:11

Now, it needs to be said that gentleness (along with meekness) is not a weakness. It doesn't mean we allow others to walk all over us. It's not people-pleasing and it's definitely not remaining quiet while others are abused. Gentle people speak up; they mean what they say and say what they mean. They're direct and assertive.

Wait... isn't gentleness the opposite of direct and assertive? No.

Jesus was gentle with the woman who committed adultery, and yet he directly told her to "sin no more." [ John 8:11 ] God is seeking gentleness with strength; power under control.

Jesus was also referring to being humble toward God - having respect and fear of the Lord is absolutely necessary for inheriting the earth. What does fear of the Lord look, feel, and sound like? I wrote about it in this blog post.

Practicing meekness and gentleness produces peace in our spirits. It encourages rest. We can stop striving so much for peace within us when we choose to practice gentleness. Jesus said that when we do, we'll inherit the earth.

What does inheriting the earth look like and mean? God will renew and redeem His fallen creation - that's us! Hallelujah! We will become partakers of the earth and receive it as our own possession.

Paul wrote in Romans 4:13: "For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the world was not through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith." Our inheritance comes through our faith in Jesus, knowing He will guide us to the promised land God has created for us if we abide in Him and His Word.

My understanding is that we take possession of our promised land through love, compassion, and assertiveness, with the sword of the Spirit (The Word, Jesus). This is the opposite of how land has been captured and possessed in the entire history of the world - with the sword of steel and war, with bloodshed and capturing of people turning them into slaves.

Jesus showed us how to live, y'all. Peter cut off the guy's ear in the garden of Gethsemane, and then Jesus healed it - that's power under control. We have that same power inside of us.

For God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you showed for His name when you served the saints—and you continue to serve them. Now we want each of you to demonstrate the same diligence for the final realization of your hope, so that you won’t become lazy but will be imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and perseverance. - Hebrews 6:10 - 12

I think Paul says it perfectly there, so we're just gonna leave it. I'd love for you to take that passage with you today. Keep thinking on it, pray over it, and ask God to reveal to you the depths of what He's saying.
